Vintage 9ct Gold Brooch with Large 15 Carat Alexandrite Colour Change Sapphire (Code 2432)

Description

A vintage brooch in 9 carat gold mount.  The star of the show is the large 15 carat colour change 'Alexandrite' stone.  This lovely example sparkles in the light and shows intense purple in incandescent light and blue under fluorescent light (see second image).  In mixed lighting it can shimmer both colours through the facets creating a wonderful display.

The stone isn't a true Alexandrite (it would cost more than a house if it were), it is actually a lab grown colour change sapphire.  These were developed in the early 20th century to simulate Alexandite as the colour change effect was much sought after.  They were marketed as Alexandrite like stones.  These stones were (and still are) lab grown using the flame fusion method and were quite expensive in their time.  The stone is made from exactly the same material as mined sapphire and it has the same properties and also tests as a sapphire, it requires magnification and an expert eye to determine it is lab grown and not mined.

This example likely dates to the inter war or early post war years.  The mount is unmarked but tests as 9 carat gold.  It has an old style open pin fixing and there is also a safety chain.  If you like glittery purple and want something a bit different you will love this piece.

Very good for period, wear is very minor.
