Thomas Till Biblical Moulded Stoneware Jug Prodigal Son - Antique Victorian (Code 2442)

Description

An early Victorian period moulded stoneware jug by Thomas Till (of the Staffordshire Potteries).  It depicts a biblical scene, probably 'The Prodigal Son' over a stippled ground with large exotic leaf forms to the front.  The handle is formed in the shape of bamboo stems.  The colour changes depending on the light, in North window light it is a pale grey with a hint of blue-green as depicted here.  In other lights it can be more blue or more grey, the glaze pigments causing the shift in colour.

The jug is unmarked but a known design by Thomas Till with two marked examples being catalogued in reference works.  It dates around 1840-45 during the early years of Queen Victoria's reign.  It is quite a rare piece with relatively few being known and rarely found on the open market.

Condition

Very good for period.  Minor wear and slight production flaws as is usual for these items.
