Description
A beautifully painted cabinet plate by J Hallmark for Royal Doulton and retailer Lovington Bros. It is painted with a winter scenic of Ptarmigan in a Highland setting with two birds settled on the ground and one standing. The ground is a lovely warm ivory tone highlighted by a gilt rim and border of dots, all the work is hand painted.
The reverse has the Doulton printed mark with a registered design number dating circa 1892. It also also titled 'Ptarmigan', and there are further impressed marks and scripted numbers. It is signed to the front 'J Hallmark', this artists work is often found alongside that of the noted Joseph Hancock, the signatures having more than a passing resemblance to each other. Little seems to be known about 'J Hallmark' with few references available. I have also been unable to ascertain any useful information about the retailer Lovington Bros.
A lovely example of a late Victorian cabinet plate and the painting style would also fit in nicely with Worcester Highland scenics (Doulton examples being quite sparsely available).
Condition
Very good order, minor glaze flaws from firing. A fine example.
