Large Heavy Antique/Vintage Khmer Thai Guardian Temple Singha Lion - Gilt Bronze (Code 2655)
Description
A remarkably heavy cast bronze figure of a Khmer Singha temple guardian lion. Quite likely made in Thailand in the early to mid 20th century. It appears to be solid cast which would seem rather odd for the tourist market and as such it weighs nearly 12lbs! It's fearsome face has a flaming style mane and sharp teeth to keep away the evil spirits. These figures are based on original temple carvings from the region, and this is a male example complete with male parts. It was originally gilded, probably with gold leaf and most of this has worn away through the years now leaving glinting highlights. A superb look and perfect for chasing away evil spirits!
Condition
Minor casting flaws as always with such pieces. The gold leaf largely worn away. See the images for overall condition.
