Isaac Van Amburgh Titus Menagerie Antique Staffordshire Moulded Stoneware Jug (Code 2439)
Description
A mid 19th century moulded jug in blue glaze and produced in the Staffordshire region. The jug is a souvenir relating to Isaac Van Amburgh's 'Titus Menagerie' show which he brought to England from the USA in 1838. His show featured lions, tigers and panthers and was patronised by the young Queen Victoria. His show became so popular that souvenir ware was quickly produced and a number of jugs both printed and moulded can be found celebrating his performances. Many are quite poorly produced with little detail, but some such as this piece here are quite well executed. The scenes are taken from engravings of the period, and artwork including those by Landseer. This jug features a scene from the 'The Brute Tamer of Pompeii', part of Van Amburgh's show. He was not without controversy at the time with some citing harsh and cruel training methods.
This jug is unmarked, and indeed there do not appear to be any examples of moulded jugs of this form with the makers name. They would have been commissioned to sell a souvenir ware which was generally unmarked at the time. This jug dates around 1840 to the first years of Queen Victoria's reign and is also available in a smaller size. A matching jug can be found in the Victoria & Albert museum in London in the 'theatre and performance' collection.
