Description
A late 18th century provincial oak large bible or documents box. It has a lovely warm tone and is of traditional construction with hand cut nails in parts and it stands on bracket feet. It has a lock with a brass escutcheon which works and there are iron hinges. There is an internal divider sectioning off part of the interior. At this size it could have had many uses but they are generally termed document or bible boxes where books, documents and reference materials would be kept.
Internally the box has an iron lock and latch and iron hinges, these look to be mid 19th century replacements. The handles and escutcheon are brass and likely original.

Condition
Period knocks, marks, wear as expected. Some damage to the lid in rear corner shown in close up. Hinges and lock system appear to be mid 19th century replacements. Surface and patina seem original. Some very old minor worm damage which has been retreated and sealed as an extra precaution.
