Antique Victorian Tunbridge Ware Wood Ladies Work Box with Birds, Dogs & Flowers (2935)

A very attractive Victorian period Tunbridge ware work box.  The lid features a turreted house and banded inlay.  To the front it has a large twin floral panel and to each side there are marquetry birds.  The back is set with a figured wood veneer panel.

Opening the box reveals eight compartments, six of which have lids.  The lids feature birds and dogs.  There are two open compartments which may originally have had lids and a pin cushion on the centre.  The tray can be lifted out to give further storage below in an open area.  It has the original brass lock which is working.  The inner lid is lined with purple velvet with gold brocade edges.

It would have been intended as a sewing/general ladies work box but would also make a very fine jewellery box.  High quality work with lovely inlay of the different subjects.

Condition

Very good for period, normal age related marks and minor wear building up the patina.  Lock working and comes with the key and tassel.  Minor surface splits in some of the veneer from normal age related shrinkage.  A few slight tile losses to the front floral panel.  See images for overall look.
