Antique Victorian Provincial Wood & Silk Patchwork Sewing / Work Box c1870 (Code 2504)

Description

A delightful 19th century Victorian period provincial sewing box.  It is made from Mahogany and has patchwork panels around the sides in sewn hexagons.  The box opens to reveal an inset tray with a central pin cushion area.  The area beneath is open for storage.  It comes with some accessories visible in the images and these came with the box when we acquired it.  Some of the contents are vintage, but not original to the box of course.

There is lovely detail to the top with the castellated border and top plaque.  It has good quality brass hinges stamped 'Bramptons Patent' and the quilted panel inside the lid looks original.

Condition

Lovely warm patina.  Typical knocks, scratches, marks and small losses as expected for age of a working item, but nothing which spoils the box.  Patchwork a little frayed along the edges in places.  Internal quilting, lining and pincushion worn and frayed although looks original.  Rough line below rim inside box, perhaps originally had a fabric liner covering the interior.  Felt to base is a replacement.
