Description
A mid to late 19th century Victorian period walnut small sized writing slope. It has inlaid bands in the Tunbridge style of miniature marquetry squares. It has a shield shaped escutcheon and top inset plaque in mother-of-pearl and there is cross banding to the lid and front. Inside it has a blue velvet writing area and a brass latch for opening the lower section. There is a lid to cover the writing instrument section, and a space for an inkwell (not present). It has a good quality brass lock with key and this works fine as do the hinges. It is quite a small example, small enough to travel with or to use at a personal desk for example. Nicely polished and a good decorative piece..
Condition
Nicely polished and good looking as can be seen in the images, Normal age related wear, scratches and knocks. Slight losses of veneer at edges, but nothing significant and typical for age. Velvet worn and thinned as expected and parted through the fold line. Pull tabs worn away. No inkwell. Base recovered in modern felt.
