Description
A very rare Royal Doulton cabinet plate painted by Leslie Johnson, it is a full (dinner plate) sized example. It features a scene from Shakespeare's Henry VI play and there is the matching quote to the reverse. It is signed to the left of the dead King's body, the signature is not very prominent. Johnson was a master painter at Doulton producing some of the finest ceramic painting of the early 20th century. Interestingly he was more known for flowing romantic images of girls in the Art Nouveau style. Here he has turned his hand to something altogether more sombre, but retaining the detail and discipline he was noted for right down to the iron hinges on the door. The outer part of the plate also has exceptional raised gilt detail which is of course in real gold. The Doulton printed marks can be found to the reverse along with the gilded foot rim which was only used on the finest pieces. It dates to the early 20th century, late Edwardian or early Deco, the number 11 next to the mark possibly signifying the date as 1911.
