Antique Ottoman Turkish Large Copper Water Storage Jug Artisan Hand Made (Code 2532)
Description
A large Ottoman Turkish copper water jug dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. It is artisan made with hand cut dovetail joints and brass brazing, even the rivets appear hand cut. Repousse star and crescent design to the front and further crescent near the rim. The handle has a substantial thumb rest which is needed to help pour the vessel as it is heavy when filled with water.
Down the front where water has dripped there is so much verdigris patina that it almost has a stone like look to the surface. These copper vessels were used to store water overnight where the copper would help eliminate any bacteria in the water so it could be used the next day. This example was made to be used rather than being a tourist ware item.
Condition
Artisan hand made so not a factory perfect piece. Lots of patina and wear. Holds water, no splits detected. Substantial copper content. Some knocks and dents.
