Antique Mughal Indian Islamic Brass Aftaba Ewer Chased Leaves - 18th Century (Code 2653)

Description

A very attractive Indian brass aftaba dating to the Mughal period during the late 18th century.  It has a long pouring spout protruding from about the halfway point of the body.  It has a repeating leaf type patterns and raised teardrop to the body with a floral design.  The decoration has softened through many decades of handling and cleaning.  It has a gallery type base with four feet.

It is of Persian influence and from the Northern regions during the period of Mughal Islamic control.  Originally it would have been used for pouring (often scented) water for cleaning the hands and feet.  Beautiful soft gold colour has developed over the years.

Condition

Softening of the detail as you would expect for the age from handling and cleaning.  Generally kept in a state of polish with some patina building in recessed areas.  Some slack  in the lid hinge as expected.  No significant knocks.  Doesn't quite sit on all four feet on a flat surface.  See the images for detailed view of the overall condition.
