Antique Limoges Porcelain Large Pate-sur-Pate Vase by Artist Leroux c1915 (Code 2385)
Description
A large early 20th century Limoges pate-sur-pate porcelain vase. It has two beautiful panels of diaphanous nymphs, in one panel they are frolicking in an outdoor setting. In the other they are playing instruments accompanied by a male seated figure with a lyre and a swan at his feet. The panels are signed by the artist Leroux who worked for Limoges in the early 20th century.
The vase dates around 1910-20 and has the lingering style of the Art Nouveau merging into the Art Deco being a transitional piece. It is apparently unmarked, but the style is undoubtedly Limoges and the artist Leroux is catalogued as producing pate-sur-pate for this factory.
This is a very large item for the pate-sur-pate method, the multiple firings required produced a high failure rate, and the larger the item the more likely it was to crack in the kiln during a firing. To assist with this it was made in three parts, the main body, the lid and the base. The base is connected to the body by a threaded rod and wingnut as typical for this period. It is large enough to make a feature piece and the gilded rams head masks and knop enhance the style.
Condition
Very good for period, slight gilt wear in places. A fine and beautiful piece. Please excuse the white reflections in the images, it has a high gloss finish and reflected the studio lights quite significantly.
