Antique James Macintyre Aesthetic/Arts & Crafts Biscuit Barrel Silver Plated Lid (Code 2730)
Description
An interesting transitional style biscuit barrel by the renowned firm of James Macintyre. It combines the Aesthetic with Arts & Crafts and also anticipates the Art Nouveau movement. It dates around the 1880's.
The body is earthenware with a creamy glaze. The green is striking and there are panels of floral studies including iris. The lid and mount are silver plated and the lid is marked EPNS, there is decorative engraving of flowers to the lid.
The base is impressed 'Macintyre' in a semi-circle, however it is very hard to spot and read, requiring oblique light to reveal due to being filled with glaze.
Condition
It present beautifully as you can see. There is fine crazing all over, so the base some of this has developed into fine hairlines. There are two firing cracks through the foot rim. The gilt is remarkably good for the period and the plating seems largely intact.
