Antique Georgian George III Polished Coconut Goblet With Silver Mounts c1790 (Code 2121)

A very attractive George III period polished coconut and silver mounted goblet. It dates around 1780-1800 with coconuts being very exotic and expensive in Western Europe at the time. The grain flecks in the coconut surface are clearly visible and the polished finish works well with the silver. It has a full silver lining inside the cup allowing it to have been used for drinking at the time.

Fully lined examples are not common due to the extra expense, with most just having rim mounts. The silver is unmarked, which is relatively common for such pieces, an unusual quirk for mounted coconuts compared to most other items from the period. It tests as silver, around 800-850 grade suggesting it may be a continental European made example imported into the UK complete rather than just as the coconut shell to be fitted by a British silversmith.

As you can see in the images it is a fine looking piece with a substantial amount of silver.


Condition

Normal light age related wear, silver good with no significant faults. Some shrinkage splits in the shell through drying over the decades and quite usual. See images for detail of this.
