Antique George Jones Majolica Fox Head Strawberry Serving Dish - Victorian c1869 (Code 2376)
Description
A Victorian period Majolica serving dish by George Jones. It has leaf decoration to the bowl over the pink/mauve ground with the foxes head in treacle glaze peering over the top. The foxes tail wraps around the underside and just peeps over the rim. The underside of the dish is finished in an amazing green and iridescent tortoiseshell effect. These dishes were often used for serving fruit such as strawberries, but would also be ideal for sweetmeats and similar items.
To the underside there is the Victorian registration lozenge giving the date as 1869. The makers mark is not visible, it is possibly hidden by the thick glaze, but these items were also often unmarked. The design is referenced and the registration lozenge also positively identifies it as George Jones.
Condition
Very good for period, normal age related crazing. Minor wear to yellow of the rim. Minor glaze flaws from firing with the odd glaze pop and kiln frit, all as expected. Some glaze misses to the foot.
