Antique Edward Walley Death of Abel Moulded Stoneware Jug - Staffordshire c1850 (Code 2461)
Description
A mid 19th century Victorian era moulded jug by Edward Walley. It portrays the death of Able with one side showing Abel being beaten to death by Cain and the other has Adam & Even mourning over his body. To the front is also a small vignette of Abels offering of a lamb. The ground is stippled and there is further leaf decoration to the body and the handle. There are no makers marks which is common for this design. The same jug was also made by Alcock, but in parian ware. The colour is somewhat unusual and is perhaps more green than blue.
Condition
Very good for period. Some minor brown spots, probably from iron contamination of the clay. A bit of glaze roughness at the pouring spout. Slight firing flaws.
