Description
A Victorian period jug by Davenport Pottery of Longport, Staffordshire. It has a matt black ground with a transfer print Chinese style design which is hand coloured in enamels. The colours stand out from the ground making these pieces very eye catching on display. Note this example has the marbled detail to the base, and you can find teacups in this design with marbling to the interior of the cup. The design was produced in the 1860's and they are relatively scarce today. Printed Davenport mark in blue to the base.
Condition
Good for period with some scratches through the black ground. Some bubbling of the glaze to the interior and base from production. Tiny nick to the handle terminal at the bottom. Some wear to the red paint around the rim.
