Antique Cork & Edge Victorian Moulded Stoneware Beer Jug c1850 - Unrecorded? (Code 2470)
Description
A mid 19th century Victorian period moulded stoneware jug. It is in the form of a coopered barrel with the handle formed in the shape of a barley sheaf with hops moulded into the top of the jug. The Jug is quite substantial and the decoration suggests it was intended for beer. The mark to the base is the Royal Arms, this version is recorded as being used by Cork & Edge although the maker has not included any further details which are often found with this mark. Interestingly I can't find this design referenced either to Cork & Edge or any other factory. It would date circa 1850 and is made in buff coloured stoneware. the handle and interior are glazed. It is very well produced, a handsome piece.
Condition
Very good condition for period. Tiny flecks of kiln dust and or contamination throughout. Small chip or firing flaw to underside of base rim.
