Description
A very attractive late 19th century betel leaf box. It is of Ceylonese (now Sri Lanka) origin and is influenced by Indian designs of the period while having it's own distinct form. The main box is made from brass and it has silver and copper applied decorative panels. The base is also decorated which is a nice touch considering it is rarely seen in use. The brass sections are relatively slender for the period, given that there is extensive silver work it suggests it was perhaps lightweight by design rather than cost intent. It is of course hand made and these items sometimes contained further small pots or divisions within them for other betel nut paraphernalia such as areca nut and lime. The lid has a simple friction fit to keep it closed.
Condition
Very good for period, and a very attractive item. Normal age related wear, minor deformations, hand made inconsistencies to production as expected.
