Antique 19th Century Rosewood & Mother of Pearl Ladies Work Box with Lock & Key (Code 1808)
Description
An attractive mid 19th century Victorian period work box in rosewood. The angular lines and mother of pearl inlay are typical of the 1840-50 period. This is quite a substantial example and as you can see they have selected nicely figured wood for the construction and this would have been an expensive item in its time. Generally these were owned by ladies and contained all kinds of items they may use along with personal items. There is a fold down flap contained in the lid and a tray with various divisions. Beneath the tray is an open area for larger items. It comes with its key and the lock still works.
Condition
Generally good, some marks, spots and wear, minor faults to surface but nothing major - see images. Interior worn and aged as expected, some loss of the decorative beading to the top tray. One of the feet appears to be a replacement.
