Antique 18th Century French Faience Glazed Polychrome Plate c1780 Louis XVI (2937)
Description
A late 18th century French faience pottery plate in polychrome decoration with blue, yellow and manganese details. Painted with a central roundel with a building in a waterside type scene. The rim is wave edged and the faience glaze is white with a slight hint of warmth. Marked to the reverse with a stylised 'W'. William Chaffers suggests this mark is possibly from one of the Strasbourg works, although the decorative style would appear to fit more with Nevers.
Condition
Glaze chips around the rim. A stress/firing crack through the well edge, most visible to the reverse. Glaze flaws from production as expected for the type of item.
