An Antique Tunbridge Ware Rare Correspondence Letter Box circa 1860 (Code 8204)

Description

A very attractive mid 19th century antique Tunbridge ware box.  It is a rare correspondence box with twin slots and a divided interior and is the first example we have seen in this form.  The box is not marked but is possibly by Thomas Barton.

The box is finished in rosewood and has inlaid geometric bands.  There is a larger band around the lower box of stylized flower.  To the lid is a rectangular panel featuring a floral spray.  The box has a fully working lock and comes with a tasseled key.

The box interior features a single dividing panel and is lined with green and brown paper.  A very fine collectors piece and a very rare configuration.

Condition

Good for period with usual age related wear and knocks.  Some old knocks to the corners with some repair to the corner veneer to the top left back of the lid and front lower right corner of the base - visible in the images for you and not really affecting display.  A few minor veneer splits but nothing of concern.  Some wear and discolouration to the paper on the interior as you would expect along with a green ink stain to the interior base paper.  Pictures shown of all sides so you can get a good look at the general condition.  Nicely polished and ready for display.
