Description
A fine Victorian period carved horn (bovine) and silver beaker by Sampson Mordan & Co. It is beautifully carved with flowers and a variety of birds. It has a silver rim with griffin head crest. The base features a glass disk which is an interesting and unusual feature. The hallmarks are partially rubbed, (but we had another with a complete mark so we can confirm it was hallmarked in London and dated 1882).
The style takes influence from the Aesthetic and the design works very nicely with the natural material. The silver mount was made to fit the item so undulates a little adding extra charm.
We have been unable to find reference to any other examples like this aside the few we have suggesting they are quite rare.
Condition
Hallmarks rubbed and some wear and indents to the silver typical of age. Minor wear to the horn with no significant faults to the carving detected. An indent to the horn body just below and to the left of the crest - possibly a chip or a natural void/flaw in the material.
