Description

A rare Spode china custard cup from the 2nd period (Josiah Spode II) circa 1815.  It is hand painted with flowers over the yellow ground and has a butterfly handle.  The design is referenced as 'fly handle cabinet cup'.  It has a carefully hand painted mark to the base in black (mark 11 - Leonard Whitter).  A cup (with saucer) of the same body shape but different decoration can be found in the Victoria & Albert museum, London, accession number C.720&A-1935.
 
These examples are now extremely scarce and rarely found on the open market.
 

Condition

Some gilt wear to the rim, foot rim and handle edges etc.  A couple of tiny pieces of kiln frit adhered to the body internally.  A couple of tiny air pops in the glaze from production.  A couple of small glaze scratches, see images for general presentation.
