Pair Antique Burmese Cast Bronze Chinthe Temple Guardians with Glass Jewels (Code 2521)

Description

A pair of cast bronze Burmese Chinthe (leogryphs).  These fearsome looking creatures were used as guardians at the entrances of Buddhist temples, and are the Burmese equivalents of foo dogs.  This pair are set with glass 'jewels' all in green although many are now lost as you can see.  They have been kept quite well polished but have developed a nice mellow tone.  Even the tongues are cast inside the mouths with detail to the teeth.  They date to the late 19th century and such pairs are relatively scarce.

Condition

The majority of the glass jewels are missing to one, the other has a few more surviving.  Various casting flaws including them not sitting flat on their feet.  See images for general condition and appearance.
