Description

An early 20th century art pottery mug made in Jerusalem during the inter-war period (1920's).  It is in the Iznik style and traditionally fired in an uncontrolled kiln.  It was made in the Nablus Road workshop (Jerusalem) started by David Ohannessian (painter) and his partners Nishan Balian (potter) and Megerdish Karakashian (painter).  The artists were Armenian artisans who fled the troubles in 1915 and settled in Jerusalem after being invited by the 'Pro-Jerusalem Society' under British military rule at the time.  They famously worked on the restoration of tiles at the 'Dome on the Rock'.

The local clay is very red and items were dipped in white slip prior to decoration.  Here you can see some of the base colour showing through the glaze in areas.  It is signed to the base with the initials of the Karakashian Balian families in the Armenian language..

Condition

Artisan made, not a factory style perfect piece.  Glaze scrape and a chip to the rim, a further glaze scrape to the handle.  Air pops in the glaze from firing.
