Antique Della Robbia Birkenhead Arts & Crafts Pottery Pot Pourri Vase / Jar c1900 (Code 2097)

A Della Robbia of Birkenhead (1894-1906) art pottery vase. It has a cream ground with hand incised flowers and sprigs. The incised lines cut through the colour and into the terracotta coloured clay. It has the ship form mark incised to the base. The vase comes with a lid which sits inset. Either by design or luck if you angle the lid at the right rotation it will pivot allowing pot pourri fragrance to come out, or be kept in.

As expected with a Della Robbia item it is hand made in the true Arts & Crafts ethos and so has an entirely different look to usual factory produced items of the period. It has glazing and potting inconsistencies as expected and of course this is the charm of pieces from this workshop.


Condition

Some chipping around the rim and some minor glaze loss at the same point. Glaze chip to lid knop. Slight chips to lid edge. Usual glaze and potting flaws as expected with Della Robbia.
